Tarvaris Tony Reid, 47, of Owings, was arrested after a dangerous pursuit through residential neighborhoods, school property, and oncoming traffic before deputies managed to stop him, according to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office.

The chaos unfolded when a deputy clocked a vehicle flying down southbound Route 2 near Wayside Drive in Sunderland at 70 mph in a 40 mph zone.

When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, Reid hit the gas, weaving through traffic, blowing stop signs, and driving into oncoming lanes, officials said.

At one point, Reid sped through the grounds of Mount Harmony Elementary School before deputies used a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver, bringing his vehicle to a stop at Skinner’s Turn Road and Industrial Lane.

But Reid wasn’t done yet—he then rammed two deputy cruisers in an attempt to escape again, authorities said.

Deputies were able to take Reid into custody, where they immediately noticed a strong odor of alcohol, officials said. A search of his person turned up a pocketknife, and he was transported to the Calvert County Detention Center.

Reid has been charged with:

  • Two counts of first-degree assault (felony);
  • Two counts of second-degree assault;
  • DWI/DUI;
  • Fleeing and eluding;
  • Reckless driving;
  • Negligent driving;
  • Other related traffic offenses.
